Halal butcher Tariq Halal is to open its first ever location in Scotland, as part of a renewed UK expansion plan.
The new concession will open inside Shields Green World Supermarket on Shields Road in Glasgow on 17 December.
It follows Tariq’s launch in Manchester and Cardiff earlier this year, as the brand aims to grow its presence across the UK, including into new Scottish stores.
The new sites add to Tariq’s more than 30 locations in London. The company also currently supplies Halal meat to more than 300 Sainsbury’s stores, and is working to expand its grocery presence with new supermarket listings.
“We’re incredibly proud to be opening our first Tariq Halal store in Glasgow as it marks the latest milestone in our expansion,” said Tariq Halal CEO Kunal Patel.
“Glasgow has a rich, diverse food culture, and we’re excited to bring our premium halal products, trusted quality, and exceptional service to the city. This is just the beginning of our journey in Scotland, and we look forward to opening many more Scottish locations.”
Founded in 1965 by Tariq Sheikh, the family-owned butcher supplies premium meats to a range of retailers, wholesalers and direct to consumer channels. It also operates a number of franchise stores alongside its own branded stores and counters.
Alongside everyday halal cuts, the new counter will stock a range of high-end halal products including wagyu and dry aged beef as well as ’Gold Steak’ cuts.
Tariq will celebrate the “grand launch” of its Scottish rollout with a range of special offers.
Demand for halal meat continues to grow in the UK, with Muslims representing more than 6% of the UK population – around four million people – according to the latest national census data from 2021.
Despite the surging demand, the UK government is failing to recognise the strength of the “dynamic high-value market”, by continually overlooking the sector in trade strategy, food policy and international promotion, meat industry group AIMS has warned.
