from Brian Stein, group chief executive, Samworth Brothers
Sir; Northern Foods failed to convince the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs of the merits of its case against Protected Geographical Indication status for Melton Mowbray pork pies.
It has now decided to spin its story with the media, including The Grocer (‘Legal action threat over pork pie protection bid’ - April 23, p10).
Northern Foods’ main manufacturing site is Pork Farms in Nottingham, within the area included in the application to the EU to protect the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie name.
But the reason for Northern Foods’ being unhappy with Defra’s decision is that in the last 10 years, Northern Foods has transferred its Melton Mowbray Pork Pie manufacturing from Nottingham to areas outside the PGI area. Therein lies the problem and the reason for the application is twofold - to stop manufacturers from transferring production of Melton Mowbray pies out the area, and, secondly, to ensure that the recipe cannot be adulterated by manufacturers or retailers.
