Asda held off a strong challenge from Sainsbury’s and its Nectar Prices as it got back to winning ways in this week’s Grocer 33 pricing battle.
Asda, which lost out to Tesco last week, came in just 72p more expensive than Sainsbury’s at £67.26. And although, unlike some of its rivals, prices were marginally (0.2%) more expensive than September 2023, Asda saw off rivals thanks to 16 cheapest and six exclusively cheapest items, including the Arla protein yoghurt, parma ham and raspberry conserve.
Sainsbury’s was cheapest for a dozen items, with four exclusively so (the brioche loaf, Carte D’Or ice cream, pork loin medallions and the Taylors of Harrogate coffee). Members of its Nectar loyalty scheme would have received an instant discount of £3.90 – representing a 5.7% saving. The Nectar deals created significant deflation at Sainsbury’s, with the retailer charging 4.5% less than it did for the same basket a year ago.
Tesco’s loyalty prices had less of an impact this week. The UK’s biggest grocer came in third at the shelf-edge and even after its Clubcard Prices were applied. Its loyalty members saved £2.25, which took its total down to £69.44, still £2.18 more expensive than Asda.
We are beginning to see some special More Card prices coming through at Morrisons, but so far it is just a trickle, with two such deals this week. The retailer was offering savings of £1.74, which took its total down to £70.40 – £3.14 more expensive than Asda.
Waitrose has kicked off its autumn Great Savings Event, though it seems to have had little impact on its competitiveness overall. It was exclusively cheapest for the couscous, Deliciously Ella granola and Kleenex balsam tissues. However, it still came in £15.02 more expensive than Asda at £82.28.
