Key to Tesco’s success was a hefty discount of £7.59 for its Clubcard members

Tesco picked up a first pricing win since mid-March in The Grocer’s annual price comparison competition, joining Sainsbury’s in second place with a ninth victory in the current Grocer 33 year competition.

Both remain well behind leader Asda overall but this week Tesco undercut its Leeds-based rival by 19p.

Key to its success was a hefty discount of £7.59 for its Clubcard members, which reduced Tesco’s total to £67.36. It also offered the cheapest price for 13 items and was exclusively cheapest for five. These included the Diet Coke, iceberg lettuce and the red cabbage.

Asda’s runner-up status clashes with its claim this week that it is now establishing a 3% to 6% pricing gap to its traditional supermarket rivals, having moved 10,000 products to a new low Asda Price, it claims.

Asda’s shopping list also came in 5.3% more expensive year on year – the highest of any of the players in our survey.

However, it did carry the cheapest price for 15 items and was exclusively cheapest for 10.

Morrisons took third spot with £69.80 – 3.2% more expensive than Asda and 3.5% more than Tesco.

At £71.67, Sainsbury’s was 6% more expensive than Tesco and 5.7% pricier than Asda.

Waitrose was slightly more competitive than usual. At £76.90 it managed to come within a tenner of the winner, a relatively rare achievement of late. Five of its prices were cheapest, of which four were exclusively so, including the brioche buns and wensleydale cheese.

Three retailers – Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose – came in cheaper year on year. This meant that despite the big jump at Asda and a 1.2% increase at Morrisons, overall inflation was just 1% year on year. Prices were also down 2.5% compared with a month ago.
