Scotmid’s property and development team has refitted eight of the society’s 75 food shops, which include convenience formats and supermarkets, this year. The most recent refits were at Leith and Uddingston.
Adrian Lorimer, head of property development, says: “The preparation for a refit takes us a week to 10 days, followed by a fortnight of carnage on the shop floor.”
These last two weeks, he says, are periods of intensive activity, with shift work covering a full 24 hours.
But refitting new stores is only part of the team’s remit says Lorimer: “Responsibilities also include overseeing refurbishments, new builds, merchandising and planograms.” And the team covers the Scottish co-op’s 130 Semi-Chem stores.
The 10-strong unit incorporates four field-based merchandisers. These include Dougal Stirrat, merchandising manager, together with merchandising development manager David Greenshields.
As refit co-ordinator, Steven Nicol has an input into merchandising plans.
The group bases instore layouts on CRTG planograms, which are reviewed twice a year and revised by Scotmid’s food office.
Says Lorimer: “The merchandisers also have a training role. They teach staff how to implement and maintain the planograms.”
The rest of the team are involved in property development.
