Supermarkets have begun slashing the cost of petrol in a pre-Christmas price war at the pumps.
Asda yesterday revealed a new national price cap of 110.7ppl on unleaded and 112.7ppl on diesel.
Its cuts of up to 3p per litre at its 294 filling stations came in today.
Asda said its latest income tracker for September showed year-on-year fuel prices had increased by 1.4%, the first time in over three years that the data had shown an increase in vehicle fuel prices from the previous year.
Asda senior director for petrol Andy Peake said: “Our new national price cap of 110.7ppl on unleaded and 112.7ppl on diesel will be welcomed by the millions of drivers who have seen fuel prices rise since Brexit.”
Tesco yesterday announced it was dropping the price of petrol and diesel by up to 3ppl at all of its 500 petrol stations.
It said millions of motorists across the country would save on the cost of fuel in the run up to Christmas.
“With the busy festive season just around the corner, we know many of our customers will be starting to prepare for the big day. So to provide a little extra help we’re cutting the cost of petrol and diesel by up to 3ppl at all of our 500 filling stations,” said Tesco fuel director Peter Cattell.
Sainsbury’s is also cutting the price of unleaded petrol and diesel by up to 3ppl across its 303 forecourts.
Izzy Hexter, Sainsbury’s fuel buying manager, said: “This is great news for motorists as they gear up for Christmas.”
Meanwhile Morrisons said signs of a strengthening pound had enabled it to cut prices, also effective from today, by 3ppl at its 33 forecourts.
Morrisons services director Roger Fogg explained: “A fall in the price of fuel due to a stronger pound is allowing us to pass further savings on to our customers. We will continue to make sure we are as competitive as we can be on price in every one of our petrol stations.”
