Demand for Polish food in UK branches of Tesco has risen for the first time in nearly a year.

Tesco said sales of Polish foods, such as pickled vegetables and canned fish, had risen by 15% since June. In December last year sales of Polish foods were down 23% compared to 2007, as Poles returned home due to the recession.

“With unemployment currently higher in Poland than in the UK, many of those who left the UK are now more hopeful of finding work over here,” Tesco’s Polish foods buyer Tomasz Zarebinski told the BBC.

Tesco sells 211 Polish food products in 563 stores in the UK and runs an online delivery website in Polish.
