Aldi’s award-winning Toro Loco red wine is now back in stores after rocketing sales left shelves bare.

wine lovers rushed to the German discounter to snap up the Toro Loco Tempranillo 2011 by the caseload after judges at the International Wine and Spirit Competition raved about the £3.59 own-label red and awarded it a silver medal earlier this year. The subsequent publicity and record sales saw Aldi’s supply run dry.

“We sold a month’s worth of bottles in just three days,” said Aldi MD of corporate buying Tony Baines. “But we have worked tirelessly to resume normal service. Bottles are now available in stores.”

The bottle, described by IWSC judges as “fruity, rounded and appealing”, compared favourably with wines costing 10 times as much.

Aldi picked up 18 medals, including three silvers and one bronze for its sparkling wines and four silvers and 10 bronze medals for its red and white wines.

Last Christmas, Aldi saw customers queuing around the block when it sold 3,000 bottles of a 40-year-old whisky for £49.99 - similar bottles are usually priced at about £300.
