Tesco is employing 140 truck drivers from Poland because it cannot fill the vacancies, according to newspaper reports.

Britain’s biggest commercial employer, confirmed it had launched a trial at the start of the month with 70 staff brought from its stores in Poland, where the company has 69 stores.

Tesco currently employs 250,000 workers and is increasing this by about 20,000 a year. In the past year it has opened more than 60 stores in the UK.

The company said unemployment rates are so low in some areas of Britain that it had difficulty filling vacancies and therefore looked at other options.
