Tesco has committed to closing its Express stores across England at 7.30pm on Sunday if England reaches the World Cup final.

The supermarket giant said it would allow thousands of colleagues to get home or to the pub in time for kick-off at 8pm, while still receiving their normal pay for those hours.

Tesco Express stores usually close at either 10pm or 11pm.

As the match falls on a Sunday, Tesco’s larger stores in England will already be closed by the time the match starts. All stores will then reopen as normal the following morning.

It said customers needing last-minute essentials would also still be able to place orders with Whoosh until 11pm.

All online grocery home shopping orders already placed for Sunday evening will be delivered as normal, Tesco added.

If England doesn’t reach the final, stores will open and close at their normal times. Stores in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will continue to remain open in line with their usual hours.

“We appreciate just how much this would mean to so many of our colleagues, so if England makes it through to the final, we will close our Express stores across England in time for all colleagues to be able to celebrate with their family and friends,” said Kevin Tindall, MD UK operations, Tesco.

It comes as Tesco announced last week it was scrapping Whoosh delivery fees on orders over £25 on selected World Cup matchdays.
