
Tesco is scrapping Whoosh delivery fees on orders over £25 on selected World Cup matchdays.
Starting tomorrow for England’s quarter-final clash with Norway, the supermarket will also be offering free deliveries all day on Wednesday 15 July and Sunday 19 July, regardless of whether England is playing.
It also offering free Whoosh delivery all week from Monday 20 July to Sunday 26 July.
Whoosh is Tesco’s on-demand grocery delivery service, offering a range of grocery items from local stores in “as little as 20 minutes”.
Customers using the service during the promotional period will automatically receive free delivery when their basket reaches £25.
Tesco said it was expecting to sell over four million packs of crisps and nuts, around 2.7 million lagers, over a million packs of barbecue meat, nearly 1.5 million packs of coleslaw and dip, and 800,000 packs of ice cubes ahead of England’s game tomorrow night.
“Excitement is building across the country with customers enjoying the summer weather, hosting gatherings, and getting involved in the build up to England’s crucial match,” said a Tesco spokesman.
“This is expected to be one of our busiest weekends this year for sales of barbecue food and drinks, and we have some great deals available for people stocking up on all their matchday essentials.
“Last Sunday also saw one of the busiest-ever days for Tesco Whoosh deliveries as customers chose rapid grocery deliveries to help them enjoy the England game and get what they need from as little as 20 minutes. We expect to see high demand again as we’re removing delivery charges tomorrow and for future game dates.”
Co-op announced earlier today it would be extending online delivery hours to 1am for the match tomorrow night from 130 stores.
Other retailers to have extended on-demand delivery hours for the World Cup include Boots and Waitrose.
