Kenco grabbed top spot last weekend with 25% of promotional activity in the top five hot beverages chart roundly beating Tetley, in second place with 19%. But it is Nescafé that once again takes the plaudits in the year-to-date chart with a whopping 42% of featured promotional space, five percentage points more than it needed to secure its first-place position last year.

Kenco, meanwhile, has actually slipped a place from second to its place in the year-to-date chart, with 18% of promotional space against 25% last year - representing a seven percentage point drop. Tetley, meanwhile, has climbed from fourth to second position, reflecting a seven percentage point increase in share of space from 14% to 21%.

In terms of the mechanics used at the weekend, Kenco was available in Sainsbury's and Asda using the 'save' mechanic on ladder racks and gondola ends. Tetley used x-for-y in Asda and bogof in Morrisons.

Nescafé, only one point behind Tetley with 18% of activity, used save and x-for-y mechanics and the brand featured on gondola ends at both Somerfield and Sainsbury's.

Typhoo, which accounted for 14% of space at the weekend, appeared in Somerfield and Morrisons on bogof. In the year-to-date chart, it remains in fifth place with 6% of activity, two percentage points lower than the 8% it managed in 2006.

Fifth place in the weekend chart is shared by PG Tips and Twinings, which each accounted for 12% of featured space. PG Tips was featured in Somerfield and Morrisons using x-for-y and 'save' on gondola ends and pallets.

In 2007 to date PG Tips sits in fourth place with 14%, a drop of one place and one point from 2006.

Twinings green tea was available in Asda last weekend with x-for-y. The brand has moved up two places from its joint 9th place position in 2006 to be in 7th place alongside Yorkshire Tea in the year to date.
