The vegan cheese alternative goes on sale on Tesco delis on 5 May

Norseland’s Mexicana Vegan will next week become the first cheese alternative to be stocked in Tesco’s grab & go deli counters.

The Mexicana listing from 5 May in 429 stores coincides with Mexican day of celebration Cinco de Mayo, and marked the “recognition of the growing popularity of vegan foods as people look to carve out healthier lifestyles and seek lower fat and lower calorie alternatives”, said the cheese supplier’s senior brand manager Lisa Harrison.

Mexicana Vegan’s dairy-based stablemates Mexicana Extra Hot and Applewood Vintage will also go on sale in the fixture, which replaced Tesco’s full-service traditional delis in 2019. The products will be priced at £2.30/200g for Mexicana Vegan and £2.20/170g for the two dairy cheeses.

Developed in collaboration with Heather Mills’ V Bites, the coconut-based Mexicana Vegan was launched last June and contains the same spice mix and real bell and jalapeño peppers as its dairy cousin.

“We are excited to bring the new Mexicana Vegan product into the range,” said buying manager for speciality cheese Hugh Kenney-Herbert.

“It will complement our existing range brilliantly, while also giving our vegan customers a tasty alternative.”
