Marks & Spencer’s Aberdeen Angus beef with red onion chutney sandwich has been voted the best new sandwich of the year.

The sandwich attracted 14% of the vote in the British Sandwich Association’s survey of 3,000 consumers.

That was five percentage points better than its nearest rivals, the New York deli bloomer and chicken teriyaki with sweet onion sauce bloomer sold by Greggs.

”We launched the competition to encourage innovation in the industry and we have been pleased by the level of support we have had from the public, with over 8,000 people visiting the competition website in the last month and over 3,000 voting,” said BSA director Jim Winship.

“The creation of new sandwiches is key to keeping consumer interest in sandwiches.”

Twenty-three new sandwiches were mentioned by those taking part in the online survey, which launched in January. The winning entry is sold in 246 M&S stores.
