Brakes van 4

More than 400 workers employed by Brakes have secured a pay deal worth up to £2,434.

According to Unite the Union, which represents the employees based in Newhouse, Motherwell, the offer will see pay increases of between 5.1% to 9.8% on the basic hourly wage for warehouse workers, hygiene and distribution drivers.

An 88p increase will be applied to hourly rates of pay for all workers, alongside a one-off payment ranging from £458 to £515.

The pay package will apply to wages from July but next year the pay anniversary date will be brought forward to April.

“The Brake Brothers wage deal is another good pay win successfully negotiated for our members,” said Unite general secretary Sharon Graham.

“It builds on the successes already made at the company and it clearly shows that Unite continue to deliver better jobs, pay and conditions for our members.”

Brakes provides wholesale food distribution services from the Newhouse facility to the hospitality and retail sectors. A significant proportion of the company’s work comes from government-based contracts to Scottish prisons, schools and social care homes.

Unite said that it was working with the wholesaler on its development plans, which would see additional investment allocated towards an on-site extension for 2026.

The investment would see the Newhouse facility extended by 50,000 sq ft to boost growth in Scotland and will initially create 50 jobs, with the potential fo this to grow by a further 100 new jobs.

Unite industrial officer Pat Mcilvogue added: “The package is worth a substantial amount to workers over the coming nine months. It’s an exciting time to be part of Brake Brothers with the expansion of the Newhouse facility and we look forward to delivering even more success for our members.”
