Branston has launched a duo of pickle-and-mayonnaise-hybrid spreads.

Two variants of ‘Branstonnaise’ – Smooth and Small Chunk – have rolled into Asda and Sainsbury’s (rsp: £1.99/260g).

The “supermarket-first” innovation has been launched to coincide with the brand’s 100th anniversary. It was “the ultimate tangy, creamy spread”, suitable for dipping, spreading, dolloping and drizzling, said Branston.

Branston senior brand manager Angharad Wilson Dyer Gough said she was “so excited to be expanding our product range even further with a brand-new recipe: Branstonnaise”.

“From pickles and relishes to chutney and sauces, we know people just can’t get enough of that iconic Branston Pickle taste, so we wanted to create something that’s never been seen before on supermarket shelves.”

It comes after Branston launched a limited run of ‘Braviar’ tins for pickle fans in August. The tins, which contained mini Branston pickle-flavoured balls resembling caviar, were also launched to mark its centenary year.

Amid the celebratory NPD push, however, Branston has struggled to supply its Baked Beans over recent weeks due to disruption caused by the war in Ukraine.

As reported by The Grocer last month, a Branston spokeswoman confirmed it was “experiencing some supply challenges due to the limited availability of a particular maize starch”.

The issue had “primarily been caused by wider supply chain issues resulting from the conflict in Ukraine and a poor harvest”, she said.
