Aldi is rolling out solar panels to 90 more stores, taking the number equipped with the energy-saving technology to about 500, or close to half its UK estate.
The discounter is set to install 144 kWp solar panel systems across 41 stores by the end of 2025 and another 49 next year, as part of a £7.7m investment in on-site renewable energy.
The installations will generate an average 100,000 kWh annually, according to Aldi.
The supermarket is also equipping any upcoming new stores with the same solar energy system.
“We’re making practical, long-term changes to how we power our operations, which will help us generate more of our energy on site from renewable sources,” said Aldi UK national real estate MD Jonathan Neale.
“By investing in our estate now, we’re strengthening the resilience of our operations and helping ensure we can keep delivering great value for customers across Britain in a more sustainable way.”
Aldi also converted more than 30% of its owned HGV fleet to run on hydrotreated vegetable oil in September last year, as part of its wider efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.
