Joseph Sutton joined the supermarket today, aking on the role as vice president for Express, foodservice and fuel

Former Morrisons director for convenience, online, wholesale and fuel, Joseph Sutton, has returned to Asda after nearly seven years to lead its Express division, The Grocer can reveal.

Sutton joined the supermarket today (22 September) as vice president for Express, foodservice and fuel.

He is replacing Chris Walker, who left the business earlier this month.

Chief supply chain officer David Lepley has been filling in the gap left by Walker in the interim. Sutton will now report to Lepley.

Asda said Sutton was “well placed to lead the next phase of the Asda Express expansion”.

The supermarket announced in August it was kickstarting the next phase of its Asda Express store rollout, with up to 20 new locations planned across October.

It follows Asda’s integration of 469 convenience and fuel sites that it acquired from Co-op and EG Group in 2022 and 2023 respectively, accelerating the supermarket’s growth in the convenience and foodservice channels. The conversion programme completed in quarter two of last year.

Prior to Sutton’s six-and-a-half years at Morrisons, where he also held online and commercial director roles, he worked at Asda for 11 years, from 2008 to 2019, according to his LinkedIn profile.

His roles included senior director for online grocery development, senior manager for e-commerce development, and senior project manager for process improvement.

“We are delighted to welcome back Joseph Sutton to oversee the Asda Express, foodservice and fuel functions,” said an Asda spokesman. “Joseph joins from Morrisons where he led convenience, online wholesale and fuel, after spending 13 years prior with Asda in a host of leadership roles.”
