Asda has appointed James Goodman to be its new chief people officer.
Goodman, who is currently people director for Tesco UK & Ireland, will join Asda “later this year”. He will replace Hayley Tatum, who left Asda earlier this week after 14 years.
Goodman has held a number of HR and supply chain roles during his 12 years at Tesco, including a three-year spell as Shanghai-based buying director for Tesco Home. He was appointed UK & ROI people director in June 2022 and previously spent seven years at Gap.
When he begins his new role, he will take responsibility for “all people-related matters”, including union disputes, recruitment, training and wellbeing.
“I’m thrilled to be joining Asda and – most of all – being able to introduce myself to the wonderful colleagues that power Asda day in and day out,” Goodman said.
“Asda is a great business and I can’t wait to roll my sleeves up and join Allan [Leighton] and the rest of the leadership team on our mission to return Asda to where it belongs, as a champion for hard-working families and a brilliant place to work.”
Tesco has confirmed that group finance director Alison Cheung will replace Goodman as people officer for UK & Republic of Ireland. Cheung has spent the past 13 years at Tesco, in a number of senior finance roles.
Tatum is yet to confirm her future plans.
Goodman is the latest addition to Asda’s new look senior ranks, as executive chairman Allan Leighton continues in his bid to turn the Asda ship. His appointment follows the return of Gavin Chappell as vice president of food and GM supply in March, alongside former Morrisons group retail director David Lepley, who also recently returned to take up the newly created chief supply chain officer role.
Asda is also hoping to appoint a new marketing director, after David Hills left the business for Jet2 on 28 March, 18 months after joining from Aldi.
On the latest appointment, Leighton said: “I’m looking forward to welcoming James to Asda later this year.
“He brings a huge amount of experience with him and will be a vital part of the leadership team as we continue to rebuild and deliver on our ambition to once again be the best place to work in the UK.”
