A new campaign urging the government to cut hospitality VAT in half has received signatures from more than 100,000 people in under 72 hours.

The #VATsTheProblem campaign, which is spearheaded by chef Tom Kerridge, was launched this week with an aim to get one million signatures.

Officially launching to consumers on 1 July, it is asking the government to slash hospitality VAT to 10%, in line with Europe.

The UK pays the second-highest VAT in Europe, according to UKHospitality. Europe’s average VAT bill is 12.9%, while the UK’s is 20%.

The campaign is already supported by UKHospitality, alongside other major hospitality groups including the British Beer & Pub Association, the British Institute of Innkeeping, and Code Hospitality.

Speaking on the campaign so far, Kerridge said: “What a start to the campaign, but it is just the start. More than 100,000 people backing 10% VAT for hospitality in just three days shows the strength of feeling across hospitality, and that number will only continue to grow.

“Hospitality businesses, please keep sharing the campaign with your teams and other venues in your area to get them to support, too. Let’s get this number as high as possible before 1 July, and show just how much hospitality needs a VAT cut to 10%.”
