Saputo Dairy UK has announced the suspension of one of its supply farms following footage of animal welfare abuses.
The Cathedral City owner said it did “not condone any act of animal cruelty”.
Earlier this week, footage from activist Joey Carbstrong allegedly showed 64 cases of hitting, pushing, kicking and chasing at Polshea Farm in Bodmin, Cornwall.
The secretly obtained footage collected in 2022 and again earlier this year, showed workers punching, slapping, kicking or hitting cows, sharp objects jabbed into cows, and forklilft trackers being used to drag or herd sick cows.
Footage also revealed cows enduring tail twisting, calves being dragged away by the limbs shortly after birth and a man forcing an object into a downed cow’s rectum to make it stand.
“Most of the violence we saw was sadistic and gratuitous in nature and didn’t seem to serve any purpose other than to hurt the animals, and was either committed by high-level staff or even the owner or his son-in-law themselves,” said Carbstrong. “This created a culture of abuse where attacking the dairy cows was commonplace.
“We care deeply about the way the milk we source is produced and do not condone any act of animal cruelty,” said a Saputo statement. “The footage shared is disturbing and offends the values of our customers, consumers, and employees alike.
“We have immediately suspended milk collection from this farm while we complete an investigation.”
