Nestlé has announced its intention to close its Purina PetCare factory in Barrhead, near Glasgow, which produces 400g and 1.2kg cans of pet food. The factory, which employs 206 people, will be closed indefinitely between September and December 2004, subject to consultation with unions.

Nestlé blamed the decision on changes in consumer preferences and technological developments, which have caused a serious decline in the canned pet food sector.
