Tesco and Asda are sourcing turkey from abroad despite ample British supply.
A Tesco spokesman confirmed 5% of its fresh and frozen turkey was sourced from France, while Asda admitted that 2% of its offer was from Brazil. In both cases, the meat involved was frozen crowns.
The news is a blow to the UK turkey industry which claims there is sufficient British turkey available.
"There are plenty of British birds around, whether its crown or whole birds," said one source.
Sainsbury's and Morrisons claimed all their fresh and frozen turkey was British-sourced.
