asda corrington

Asda has returned to winning ways, having lost out to guest retailer Lidl last week.

The Walmart-owned retailer’s £72.76 total came in £1.99 cheaper than runner-up Sainsbury’s.

Asda offered the lowest price for 21 items and was exclusively cheapest for 13. Of these six were fresh fruit & veg, including the fine asparagus, organic garlic, corn on the cob and Pink Lady apples.

Just three of the 13 exclusively cheapest lines were branded products. In contrast, Sainsbury’s offered the lowest price for 13 products, six exclusively so and of these four were branded: the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Colman’s casserole mix, Müller yoghurt and the Warburtons bagels.

Sainsbury’s recent price lockdown strategy certainly appears to be making it more competitive, as it has consistently emerged as Asda’s closest challenger in recent weeks.

There was just 8p separating Morrisons and Tesco this week, though both were a long way off Asda and even Sainsbury’s. Morrisons came in third at £78.17, making it £5.41 more expensive than Asda. It was cheaper than any of its rivals for the Bisto gravy granules and Innocent orange juice, however.

Tesco had more products on offer than the other retailers but still came in £5.49 more expensive than Asda at £78.25. Tesco’s only exclusively cheapest item was the Cadbury Dairy Milk.

Tesco was carrying 13 promotions, while Waitrose had 12, Morrisons 11, Asda 10 and Sainsbury’s just seven.

Waitrose was more than a tenner more expensive than Asda at £83.40. It had the lowest price for just three lines. It was, however, exclusively cheapest for the Amarula, on which a £2.50 discount meant it was selling the cream liqueur for £10 - £2.50 cheaper than all its rivals.
