Allan Leighton’s cheeky post celebrated Asda’s Gold Awards pricing win

After winning back the annual Grocer 33 Price competition at the Grocer Gold Awards this week, Asda has picked up where it left off, as the cheapest supermarket for the second week running in the new year.

Asda’s £71.14 total was nearly 3% ahead of nearest rival Tesco.

Asda’s investment in lowering prices was evident from several angles. Its basket cost 5.1% less than it would have done a year ago and boasted 15 exclusively cheapest items, including a clear lead on Birds Eye chicken quarter pounders.

The battle for second place was much tighter. Nearest rival Tesco recorded the highest month-on-month decrease with a £73.04 basket – that’s 7.1% less than a month ago. Sugar snap peas and mixed leaf salad were exclusively cheapest at Tesco.

Just 19p behind came Sainsbury’s (£73.23). Nectar prices on the Twister lollies and Twinings teabags provided two of its four exclusively cheapest items. Sainsbury’s also provided the cheapest ingredients for nachos, with its own-label tortilla chips, Doritos salsa, Holy Moly Guacamole and grated cheddar totalling £7, ahead of Asda’s £7.83.

Asda was 7.3% cheaper than Morrisons this week (£76.73). Morrisons was most competitive in the chiller aisle, with exclusively cheapest salmon fillets and goats cheese.

Waitrose was again off the pace, with its £85.24 total some 19.8% pricier than Asda. It was exclusively cheapest for the Little Dish fish pie thanks to a 20% off promotion.

Price wars have kept the overall cost of our basket down, with an average reduction of 2.5% month on month and annual increase of just 0.1%.

The biggest year-on-year increase was for the Twister lollies (up 16%) and the biggest decrease for the Walkers peanuts (down 23%).
