Dialling out of inflation isn’t easy but this week’s Grocer 33 pricing survey certainly featured fewer scary inflation numbers than it has for a while.

On average, supermarket prices were up 9.6% compared with the same week in 2021, while prices edged up by just 0.9% month on month.

This week’s fastest-rising product was the own brand apple sauce (see right), up 34% year on year. Chip fans will lament a 30% jump in own brand frozen oven chips.

However, these were the only two lines to increase by at least 30%, followed by the Alpro almond drink (up 29%), madeira cake and air freshener (both 24%), orange juice and Cadbury Mini Rolls (both 21%).

In recent weeks, the category seeing the most inflation has been dairy but this week’s dairy items were more muted with Cathedral City mature cheddar up 17% and the own brand halloumi costing 13% more than last September.

Having said all that, all bar two items on our shopping list were up in price. The Bodyform panty liners stayed at the same price, while the ground almonds were 2% cheaper.

Asda comfortably offered the cheapest basket at £55.79 but also recorded the highest inflation, with prices up 13% year on year. It offered the lowest price for 20 items, with 11 exclusively cheapest.

Sainsbury’s, where prices were up just 6.6%, was £4.51 more expensive than Asda.

Morrisons was over a fiver more expensive than Asda at £61.14. Tesco, meanwhile, was £6.02 more expensive than Asda – but factoring in its Clubcard Prices initiative would have narrowed the gap to £3.57.

Waitrose, which last week reiterated its commitment to quality, was £13.86 pricier than Asda at £69.65. A well-timed deal on the marmalade was one of two cheapest items.
