Sainsbury's

Pitta breads showed the sharpest increase on last October – up by 48%

Sainsbury’s came in as the cheapest retailer for the second week running but, just as last week, it would have been undercut if we factored in Tesco Clubcard prices deals.

At £64.62, Sainsbury’s was 76p cheaper than Asda and £1.02 cheaper than Tesco. It offered the lowest price for 16 products and was exclusively cheapest for nine, including the Fever-Tree Ginger Beer, fish pie mix and Leffe beer.

Asda was cheapest on 17 products and exclusively so for six including the avocados, baby carrots and orange juice.

Tesco was only exclusively cheaper than its rivals for the beef slices and Nescafé Gold Blend. However, its loyalty card holders would have received an instant discount of £1.75, which would have reduced its total bill to £63.89, making it 73p cheaper than Sainsbury’s.

Morrisons announced price cuts to 150 key grocery lines last week, but was still £3.11 more expensive than Sainsbury’s at £67.73. Waitrose meanwhile was almost £10 more expensive than Sainsbury’s at £74.40.

This was also the second week in a row where the basket tracked year-on-year inflation at 9% – ie below the average rate – although our shopping list was also 1.5% more expensive month on month. Asda’s prices were up 13.4% on last year, Sainsbury’s climbed 12.1%,  Tesco prices were up 7.9%, Waitrose 6.1% and Morrisons just 5.2%.

Of the items in our basket, 29 were up compared to October 2021. The sharpest increase was on the pitta breads – up 48%. The Dr Oetker pizza cost 37% more than a year ago and the cheddar slices were up 32%.

In all, seven products were up by at least 20%. Two products were considerably cheaper however – the Neutrogena hand cream (see right) was down 13% and the Munch Bunch yoghurts down 11%.
