How much time do employees spend simply looking for the right cleaning tool?

Vikan surveyed 110 food retail professionals and found that around 60% spend five minutes or more searching for cleaning tools every day.

In a store with 10 employees, that can add up to more than 300 hours of lost time per year – or around £3,939 in labour costs. Across a 250-store chain, the annual cost could reach £0.98 million.

But inefficient tool management isn’t just a labour issue. As food retailers face increasing regulatory pressure and rising customer expectations, the way cleaning tools are selected, stored and managed can also affect food safety, consistency and audit readiness.

Standardised tool programmes – including dedicated storage and colour-coded segregation – can make tools easier to find while helping minimise cross-contamination and cross-contact risks across departments. Hygienically designed tools that are fit-for-purpose can further support effective cleaning and food safety efforts.
