Kerrygold Honey Spread - a blend of butter and honey - has been axed less than a year after launch because of poor sales, it has emerged.

Brand owner Adams Foods told consumers on the Kerrygold Facebook page in late December that it was no longer viable to produce Kerrygold Honey Spread because consumer demand for the product had failed to meet “the necessary volume that was required for us to meet our minimum production runs”.

The product, launched in April 2011, disappeared from shelves in late November, having previously been stocked in 188 Asda, 112 Tesco and 60 Morrisons stores.

“Kerrygold Honey Spread was launched with limited distribution, and despite being genuinely innovative and satisfying a consumer need, sales were lower than anticipated,” Adams Foods told The Grocer this week. The company added it would now concentrate on growing its other Kerrygold SKUs.

Adams Foods also announced this week that it had started selling Kerrygold 100% Softer in the UK mults again six months after it was delisted by Sainsbury’s. The spread has been available in 155 Sainsbury’s stores since the beginning of this month.

  • Since finding the honeyspread advertised in the spreadable pack last year we have been trying to buy and try the honeyspread but could not find any shop or supermarket in our area that sold it !!!!!!! If it is not exposed to the danger of being sold it will never get volume sales - such a shame because from its discription I believe I would have become a regular purchaser.

  • My brother introduced me to the kerrygold honey spread last year.. and my 6 year old son loved it on his toast in the mornings. I've been trying to get this product for months now but after reading the article i'm gutted that they have now took it off production. any chance of launching the spread again with better advertisement would get more results. such a shame.

  • Well I am not what a surprise as I tried it at my daughters in Bristol last year and loved it and since then have tried every where to get it.
Here in Basingstoke the supermarkets had never heard of it.
Maybe it needed to advertised better.

  • The only place I saw this advertised was on the inside of the butter tubs, and would have bought it, but did not see it in any of the supermarkets I go to. A shame it's been discontinued as it sounds lovely! Maybe better advertising and more widespread distribution would have worked.

  • I bought some to try, and loved it, It gave just a hint of honey and was gorgeous on toast :-) now I can't get it anywhere. Why bring out a new product, let the public sample it...and then take it off the shelves. Bring it back please.
