In his opinion piece recently published in The Grocer, the Soil Association’s Rob Percival stated the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) sent “more than 1,800 emails and documents” to the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), seeking to have the term ‘minimally processed’ removed from legislative guidance.

As Rob points out, that number of emails would indeed seem excessive. It equates to about five emails a day – including weekends.

In fact, as clarified in the DHSC’s formal response to the Freedom of Information request, FDF sent six emails on this matter.

We asked that government amend their business guidance on the new promotion regulations to remove the reference to processing. This was to make it consistent with the legislation and avoid causing confusion by introducing a new term in guidance that was not in the regulation.

We pride ourselves on following established nutrition science. We have consistently welcomed SACN’s reviews of the evidence, whatever the topic. Our members invested £180m last year on healthier product development and we remained committed to supporting healthier diets.
