Aldi is permanently rebranding a Manchester store as ‘Aldeh’, in recognition of the local pronunciation of its name and in tribute to Oasis’ reunion tour.

The store was initially given its new sign on a temporary basis in June, and it was due to be taken down after the band’s final Manchester gig. Since then, 1,300 people have signed a fan petition to make it permanent, according to Aldi.

The petition, on Change.org and started by Manchester local Ella Curtis, says: “The rebrand resonated with people across Manchester and beyond. Photos of the sign went viral, because it tapped into something meaningful: pride in where we’re from, and in what this city has given the world. In short, Prestwich got its own Blue Plaque.”

The petition has also gained over 15,000 likes on social media, and been endorsed by local MP Christian Wakeford, according to Aldi.

The store sign’s is now even marked on Google Maps, and a picture of it has been shared by Liam Gallagher on Instagram.

Aldi said Oasis fans had been queueing for selfies at the Bury New Road store in Prestwich, and posting pictures on social media.

Aldi UK CEO Giles Hurley wrote on LinkedIn: “The response has been supersonic, with Oasis fans and proud Mancunians visiting the store to see it for themselves.

“Last week, a petition was launched by a local resident calling for us to keep the sign. So naturally, we took to social media to see what our shoppers thought, turns out… people are mad for it and want the sign to stay.

“I’m pleased to announce that we’ll be keeping the Aldeh sign as a tribute to Manchester.”
