Aldi has published a list of towns and cities targeted for new stores in its £1.6bn two-year expansion plan.
The discounter said on Monday it planned to open 80 stores in 2026 and 2027, while upgrading existing ones along with its distribution network.
It came as Aldi’s annual results revealed its sales rose 1.1% to £1.81bn in the year to 31 December 2024, while profit dipped by 21% to £435.5m. CEO Giles Hurley said like-for-like sales had fallen, blaming investment in expansion and lowering prices.
Commenting again as Aldi published its list of targeted locations today, Hurley said: “Shoppers are still finding things difficult and that’s why we’re staying laser-focused on doing what Aldi does best – offering customers great-quality products at unbeatable prices.
“Nobody else is making the same commitment to everyday low prices – no clubs, no gimmicks, no tricks – just prices our customers can trust, and quality they can depend on.
“Since we opened our first UK store more than 35 years ago, we’ve brought high-quality, affordable groceries to almost 800 towns and cities, but there are hundreds more communities that don’t have an Aldi nearby.
“We’re more determined than ever to meet that demand, and that’s why we’re investing a record £1.6bn over the next two years, to bring Aldi prices closer to millions more customers.”
Aldi currently has 1,060 UK stores, with an ambition to eventually grow the estate to 1,500.
Latest data yesterday from Worldpanel (formerly Kantar) showed Aldi’s sales were up 4.7% year on year in the 12 weeks to 7 September, matching the growth rate of the total grocery market. Aldi’s market share stands at 10.7%, the same as a year ago.
