The British Snack Co has launched a range of peanuts in kerbside recyclable paper packs.
Simply Salted and Dry Roasted peanuts (rsp: £1.25/50g) have launched into Waitrose under British Snack Co’s Awfully Posh brand.
They are included as a snack in Waitrose’s £5 food-to-go meal deal.
This was the “world’s first fully recyclable paper nut pack”, claimed British Snack Co founder Tom Lock.
It was made using the same technology as the company’s kerbside recyclable paper crisp packet, which launched into pubs last April, via its British Crisps Co brand, following three years’ development.
The wrapper, created in partnership with EvoPak, is coated with a microscopic layer of aluminium and a layer of Hydropol, a water-soluble polymer resin developed and patented by British university spinout Aquapak Polymers.
These composite layers help the product inside stay fresher for longer without impacting the pack’s recyclability, according to The British Snack Co.
The aluminium layer has a thickness of just 30 nanometres; by comparison a human hair is 80,000nm to 100,000nm thick. Meanwhile, the hydropol layer can be easily washed away from the paper wrapper in recycling plants.
“It’s part of our broader strategy to be completely out of single-use flexible packaging by the end of 2025,” said Lock.
The British Snack Co is yet to transition its Awfully Posh pork snacks and popcorn into the kerbside recyclable paper packaging.
While “pork snacks will be relatively easy, popcorn was “like a sponge”, said Lock. Therefore, it was “the toughest nut to crack, but we think that we have cracked it”, he added.
