Co-op is rolling out “flexi checkouts” with dual screens that can switch between self-service and cashier-operated tills.

The convenience retailer said the technology would enhance the customer experience by ensuring tills always remained open, while reducing wait times and queues.

Shoppers using the self-service function can also view their price savings, deals and promotions, and the benefits of Co-op membership.

The new checkouts, supplied by American retail technology provider Diebold Nixdorf, also retain the traditional cashier service functionality for kiosk-only purchases or for shoppers who prefer to be served.

They are being rolled out to 150 Co-op stores by April, in what it claims is a UK grocery retailer first.

“We’re focused on creating local stores which contribute to local life and conveniently meet the needs of communities,” said Co-op head of operations, support centre and innovation David Tyas.

“We know many customers enjoy engaging with our friendly colleagues in store, while for others a quick and easy transaction is key.

“Our latest checkout technology replaces our existing tills with the added flexibility to do both – supporting our commitment to our physical store estate in high streets and communities as we continually invest and innovate to create enjoyable shopping experiences for all.”
