A new independent convenience store has opened at Sugar House Island, the canal-side neighbourhood in Stratford that aims to “redefine east London living”.
The Market, owned by local retailer Sifat Hayat and supplied by Co-op Wholesale, is the first and only convenience store to open in the 26-acre development by real estate company Vastint UK.
It features a fresh bakery and hot food offer supplied by Country Choice and a wide range of groceries, including Co-op own label, via Co-op Wholesale, formerly Nisa. The store layout has also been “carefully curated” for ease of shopping.
The 5,500 sq ft “fresh and modern” store, which launched on 12 May, aims to meet the needs of the local community, which includes residents, students and office workers, according to the retailer.
“We’ve designed The Market to cater for everyone – from quick lunchtime top-ups to full weekly shops,” said Hayat, who has over 15 years of experience in east London retail. “As independents, we’re rooted in the community and we understand how to offer choice, service and value.
“I’d love to see more developers offer units to independents. With a little trust, we can create something really special for local communities.”
