World cup watching at home in the evening

UK consumers are forecast to spend an £280m at retailers ahead of England’s quarter-final clash against Norway.

As most fans will have already stocked up on decorations, electricals, garden furniture and merchandise earlier in the tournament, VoucherCodes predicts £191.6m of that spend will be on food and drink.

It forecast that 6.7 million people will watch Saturday night’s match at bars and pubs, where they will spend a collective £105m, an average of £15.67 per person. The anticipated £40.4m food and £64.7m drink sales is set to be the highest of the World Cup to date.

That brings a total £385m spending boost for the match.

VoucherCodes has forecast £3.8bn will be spent across the whole World Cup tournament, with its model based on England reaching the semi-finals.

“As England progress through the World Cup tournament, consumers are becoming much more liberal with their spending, treating themselves to watch parties and trips to their local pubs,” said Moji Oshisanya, chief commercial officer. “This is great news for both retailers and hospitality venues who will already be riding high off the back of a heatwave sales boost.”
