Tesco has defended increasing the price of its meal deal by 25p, the third increase since 2022, in another sign of the inflation crisis facing supermarkets.
As of yesterday, the meal deal costs £3.85 for Clubcard holders, with customers without a loyalty card having to fork out £4.25.
The price of its Premium meal deal also changed, rising by 10% to £5.50 for those with a Clubcard and £6 for those without.
The move has attracted criticism on social media from some shoppers. It comes as ONS inflation figures this week show that the price of food and non-alcoholic beverages rose 4.9% year on year in July, from 4.5% the previous month.
Without the deal, the main, snack and drink combinations can come to more than £8 if purchased separately.
“Our meal deal remains great value and the ideal way to grab lunch on the go at just £3.85 for a main, snack and drink when bought with a Clubcard,” a Tesco spokeswoman said.
“With more than 20 million possible combinations, the Tesco meal deal has got something for every taste, from a classic chicken Club Sandwich to Tesco Korean Style Chicken Dragon Rolls.”
