WH Smith is rolling out electronic shelf labels to some of its UK stores.
The rollout will begin with the travel retailer’s new flagship stores in Heathrow Terminals 3, 4 and 5, before a wider deployment to further stores.
WH Smith said electronic labels would strengthen pricing accuracy, improve shelf-edge communication and improve store efficiency.
The Heathrow stores opened last month, bringing together food & drink, health & beauty, technology accessories, pharmacy services and other travel items in a single format.
Retail director Heidi Reynolds said: “At WH Smith, our focus is on making every journey better by bringing together all of the essentials travellers need in one place. As we continue to evolve our offer, the ESL solutions help us support a clearer and more intuitive customer experience while enabling colleagues to operate more efficiently in busy travel environments.”
The ESLs will be provided by Solum, a spinoff from Samsung Electro-Mechanics.
UK and Ireland manager Mark Duckworth said: “WH Smith’s new flagship stores reflect the continued evolution of travel retail, where convenience, speed and clarity are essential to the customer journey. We are proud to support WH Smith with ESL solutions designed for high-footfall environments, helping improve shelf-edge accuracy, operational efficiency and the in-store experience across key travel locations. This partnership is an important milestone for Solum as we continue to strengthen our presence in the UK travel retail market.”
WH Smith declined to confirm how many of its 590 UK stores would be make the switch.
