Asda was exclusively cheapest for 10 SKUs, including the Rana tortellini

Asda has once again delivered the cheapest basket in this week’s Grocer 33 pricing survey, but its rivals are catching up.

At £72.24, Asda was just 1.4% ahead of Sainsbury’s (£73.26), 2% cheaper than Tesco (£73.69), and beat Morrisons (£74.95) by 3.8%.

Asda was exclusively cheapest on 10 SKUs including the tortellini and tomato & mascarpone sauce, the curry kit and diced chicken breast. It also had the cheapest Febreze fabric spray and make-up wipes.

Meanwhile, second-placed Sainsbury’s ran 12 price promotions – more than any other retailer. All seven of its exclusively cheapest lines were down to Nectar Prices.

Third-placed Tesco was just 43p behind Sainsbury’s. Similarly, all five of its exclusively cheapest items were due to Clubcard promotions.

Morrisons came further behind with a basket that was £2.71 more expensive than Asda’s. But the results change dramatically when accounting for multibuy promotions, including for Morrisons More Card users. With a total of 10 multibuys this week, Morrisons’ basket would be £68.44 on a pro-rated basis, moving from fourth to first place.

Way behind the pack was Waitrose, which was 15.3% pricier than Asda and offered just one cheapest item, thanks to a promotion on Itsu gyozas.

Overall, the price war among the major mults has narrowed the gap to leader Asda. Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons each had a basket that was at least 4.1% cheaper month on month, while Asda’s basket was up 2.7% on last month.

In terms of SKUs, red pepper had the biggest price rise across the basket. The average cost of a loose pepper rose by 26% from 55p to 69p year on year.

Our basket overall cost 1.4% less than a month ago and 1.4% more than last year.
