Asda has made it eight Grocer 33 pricing wins in a row - though its victory margin was much narrower than last week when it was almost £10 cheaper than its nearest rivals.

At £56.84, Asda was £1.05 cheaper than Sainsbury’s, this week’s runner-up. Asda offered the lowest price for 18 lines, of which 14 were exclusively cheapest. The majority of these were either own label or fresh fruit & veg. Just two were branded - the Arla Skyr Yogurt and Genius pancakes.

Sainsbury’s offered the lowest price for seven lines and was exclusively cheapest on three - the basmati rice, chicken thigh fillets and nectarines. However, the retailer’s overall competitiveness this week had much to do with a key promotion on the Brancott Estate sauvignon blanc. At £7, Sainsbury’s was selling the bottle of wine for £2.50 less than Asda.

The wine was actually even cheaper at Morrisons, with an offer price of £6.50 down from £9.50. But what it gained there, it almost completely lost on the Breyers Delights ice cream. The 500ml tub was £5 compared with just £2.50 at the rest of the big four. Overall Morrisons was cheapest for nine lines and exclusively so on seven. It was £2.77 pricer than Asda at £59.61.

Tesco came in £3.76 more expensive than Asda at £60.60. This was despite carrying more deals than any of its rivals - however, of the 11 promotions just five were simple money-off deals, while the others were multibuys. Morrisons had nine deals, Waitrose six, Asda five and Sainsbury’s four.

While there wasn’t much separating the big four, Waitrose was well off the pace: at £70.29 it was £13.45 more expensive than Asda. This wasn’t helped by a £9.69 price for the wine and a price of £4.99 for the ice cream. It was, however, cheaper than all its rivals for the Dolmio bolognese sauce.
