Morrisons sold the cheapest basket this week in our price comparison survey – the first time it has been best on price in 10 months.
This was a tightly fought week, with only £1.08 separating first and fourth place.
Others had lower prices on a greater number of products, but it was universally available discounts on Cushelle toilet roll and Gourmet Mon Petit catfood that made Morrisons’ £76.25 basket the most competitive.
With 14 deals, Morrisons also ran the highest number of promotions, and pro-rating for its six multibuys would increase its lead over rivals.
Asda (£76.38) was 0.2% dearer than Morrisons. Despite offering the least by way of discounts, the Leeds-headquartered retailer was cheapest on 15 products and exclusively so for nine of those. However, inflation was most evident at Asda this week: the same items cost 6.5% more than a month ago and 4.1% more that the same time last year.

Tesco (£76.74) was the only supermarket to sell a basket that cost less than a year ago. Prices were down by 2.9% year on year and it was cheapest on 13 SKUs. However the timing of promotions meant it finished 0.6% behind Morrisons.
Sainsbury’s (£77.33) was cheapest on 13 SKUs and exclusively so for five, including the salsa, limes and Ben’s Original rice. Good news for Mexican food fans but not quite enough for victory. Across the basket Sainsbury’s cost 2.9% more than a year ago and was 1.4% pricier than Morrisons.
Waitrose (£88.02) was 15.2% dearer than Morrisons. It price-matched three cheapest SKUs and had a 5p edge on the Hovis Wholemeal loaf thanks to a 20p off promo. With eight price cuts reducing its basket total by £7.66, Waitrose was this week’s deepest discounter. But that is, of course, easier to achieve from a higher starting point.
