Entry-level pay for Aldi store workers is £11.00 an hour nationally and £12.45 within the M25

Aldi is set to create more than 6,000 new jobs in 2023 as it presses on with its expansion plans.

New stores are on the way to towns and cities including Norwich, Newcastle, Huddersfield and Shrewsbury, Aldi said this morning.

It comes a week after The Grocer revealed Lidl had dramatically scaled back its opening plans for the year ahead, to focus instead on growing its distribution capacity. Both discounters have been aiming for about 50 new stores a year for a number of years, but Lidl is now due to open just 25 in 2023, with property sources predicting only sites already agreed to will be completed.

Aldi has about 990 UK stores at the moment, while Lidl has about 950. Both have been making big gains in the cost of living crisis, with Aldi’s market share climbing from 7.8% to 9.2% in the past year, and Lidl’s growing from 6.2% to 7.1% (Kantar 12 w/e 22 January 2023).

Entry-level pay for Aldi store workers is £11.00 an hour nationally and £12.45 within the M25, making it the highest-paying supermarket in London and joint-highest with Sainsbury’s across the rest of the UK. Aldi’s new Huddersfield and Shrewsbury stores are due to open within the next month.

Aldi is also recruiting for 450 jobs across its 11 regional distribution centres around the UK, where entry-level pay for warehouse selectors is £13.18 an hour.

“Demand for Aldi has never been higher as more and more people realise they can make significant savings on every shop without compromising on quality,” said Aldi UK CEO Giles Hurley.

“Demand for Aldi has never been higher as more and more people realise they can make significant savings on every shop without compromising on quality. It’s more important than ever that we are making it even easier for more people to shop with us – including by opening dozens of new stores.”
