They are made with a vegan recipe

Nestlé is adding a new range pudding-inspired of Dessert Pastilles sweets to its Rowntree’s lineup.

Called Dessert Pastilles, the new brand will contain four flavours: Mango Sorbet, Blueberry Pie, Cherry Bakewell and Apple Crumble.

They will launch with a “slightly softer”, vegan-friendly recipe, which the brand already updated its core range to last year, after trialling more than 30 formulations to remove the gelatine while retaining the “iconic chew”.

The NPD joins Nestlé’s growing vegan portfolio, which so far includes Jelly Tots, Vegan Carnation and Nescafé Gold plant-based lattes.

Rowntree’s brand manager Meg Miller said the Dessert Pastilles were an “innovative twist” on the classic Fruit Pastilles, with four “on trend” flavours that evoked the taste of some of the “nation’s best-loved puddings”. “Our technicians had a lot of fun creating Dessert Pastilles, and we think they have done an amazing job.”

Dessert Pastilles will launch next month into the mults and convenience retailers (rsp: £1.29/139g).

The launch comes on the back of a strong year for the Rowntree’s brand, which grew its value sales by 4.2% (£3.3m) to £82.1m in 2020, on volumes up 5.7%, outperforming a wider slump (of 2.7%) in the sugar confectionery category [Nielsen 52 w/e 5 September 2020].
