What was your first-ever job? My first real job was as a church organist. I used to charge £150 for a wedding (basically 30 minutes work).

What was your worst job interview? For a graduate recruitment scheme, which I didn’t get through. Luckily I was recruited by the same company a month later.

What was the first music single you bought? Certainly wasn’t my best decision, but it was Bruce Willis - Under the Boardwalk. I should have bought Madness - It Must Be Love instead, as I went back the following day to exchange it.

How do you describe your job to your mates? Simply: selling beer, which is quickly followed by “and that really is a lot harder than it sounds!”

What is the most rewarding part of your job? Always being better than yesterday.

What is the least rewarding? The role does involve quite a lot of travelling, which can be exciting. But sometimes you miss home-cooked meals and the family.

What is your motto in life? Happy people do a better job.

If you were allowed one dream perk what would it be? Time. If you’ve seen the film Click, I would like one of those remote controls that allow you to stop time, because it just goes so quickly.

What’s your favourite movie and why? The original The Italian Job. I have three boys and we love watching it together. They also love the idea of Dad buying them all a Mini each when they are 17. They are going to be seriously disappointed when they get a 30-year-old Mini between the three of them!

What has been the most embarrassing moment in your life? When the doctor said to my wife at the scan, “there’s one head, there’s another head”, and I responded with “my God, it’s a two-headed baby!” To which the doctor quickly replied, “no sir, you are having twins”.

Do you have any phobias? Dieting.

Which celebrity would you pick to join your staff? Michael Mcintyre. He’s been through the mill to be successful but still enjoys every moment in life. I think he would bring a real bounce to any team.

If you could change one thing in grocery what would it be? We could certainly use more shoppers.
