The duo are made with soy protein pieces instead of meat

Pukka has rolled out its first-ever vegan pies.

The brand’s new duo – Vegan Chicken & Mushroom and Vegan Minced Steak & Onion – are made with soy protein chicken and steak-style pieces in place of meat, and comes with a vegan stamp of approval from The Vegetarian Society approval (rsp: £1.89/213g).

The brand did not reveal which supplier it worked with to source its vegan-friendly ingredients for the pies, which will hit Morrisons from 16 September and Sainsbury’s from 23 September.

The NPD came as “part of an ongoing investment to help put more pies on more plates more often”, said the brand’s head of marketing Rachel Cranston, adding the pies did not “compromise on taste”, citing IGD data that showed the number of vegans in the UK to have risen 305% in the past year.

“This demonstrates there’s a real opportunity to offer shoppers vegan alternatives to two of our most popular pie recipes.”

The launch comes after Pukka gave its packs and recipes a major shake-up earlier this year, when it ditched plastic windows from its pie boxes in a bid for greater sustainability and reformulated its All Steak and Minced Beef & Onion pies.
