Stoke-based foodservice company AMS Wholesale has joined The Wholesale Group as its newest member, joining more than 225 independent businesses across the retail and foodservice markets.

Beginning as a convenience store, AMS Wholesale has recently expanded with the addition of a new 20,000 sq ft warehouse space.

The business, which has a turnover of over £20m, services the QSR sector nationally with fresh, chilled and frozen foods, as well as soft drinks and confectionery. It also has a supermarket business with a range of retail lines.

“We’re delighted to become part of The Wholesale Group, whose values and vision align with our own,” said AMS Wholesale director Hasan Iqbal. “Together, we look forward to achieving great things.”

The Wholesale Group MD Jess Douglas added: “We’re delighted to welcome such an exciting wholesaler to the group. With a growth mindset, and commitment to delivering real value in the market, AMS Wholesale makes a fantastic addition to our network.

“This addition further strengthens the diversity of our network, driving innovation and creating new growth opportunities. We’re proud to have them on board and wish them a very warm welcome.”

The Wholesale Group currently has buying power worth more than £4.42bn, with its members collectively serving nearly 350,000 customers across the UK.

Speaking with The Grocer in October, retail MD Tom Gittins said the group was trading “ahead of the market” just nine months since its formation as it edges closer towards its goal of a combined membership turnover of over £5bn.

While the group plans to achieve this figure by 2027, the ambition is “way too conservative”, he said.

The buying group, which was formed in January by merging Confex and Fairway Foodservice, has experienced a 6.5% rise in group growth year-to-date, while average member spend is up 14.5%.
