Asda has brought back its Winter Fruit and Veg pledge as it vows to donate the equivalent of one million meals at the start of this year, as part of its partnership with FareShare and the Coronation Food Project.
Asda’s pledge will see over 420 tonnes of fresh fruit & vegetables donated to the UK’s leading food redistribution charity over the next 12 weeks.
It includes a variety of fruit & vegetables including grapes, citrus fruits, apples, tomatoes, lettuce, sweet potatoes, onions, potatoes, butternut squash, ginger, chillies, parsnips and sprouts.
The return of the donation programme, which was launched for the first time last year, will help FareShare’s nationwide network of over 8,000 charities and community groups with suppies of fruit & vegetables.
The work includes afterschool and breakfast clubs, homelessness shelters, and older people’s lunch clubs, all working to provide essential support services alongside meals and food support.
The donations will be provided via Asda’s wholly owned subsidiary IPL.
“The colder months bring added pressure for families facing food poverty in the UK, so by bringing back this initiative, we can continue to make a real difference to vulnerable communities,” said Asda produce commercial director Rowena White.
“We’re proud to continue our long-standing partnership with FareShare, which has seen Asda redistribute the equivalent of 10 million meals through IPL since 2011, ensuring that redistributed food reaches the people who need it most.”
FareShare and The Felix Project deputy CEO Kris Gibbon-Walsh added: “We are enormously grateful to everyone at Asda for their ongoing support. Ensuring people and communities have access to a good supply of fruit & vegetables is a big part of our mission.
“Charities receiving food from FareShare tell us they appreciate the variety of fruit & veg we provide. Across our network of over 8,000 local charities, fresh produce features in nourishing meals for older people struggling with loneliness, alongside hot dinners for people experiencing homelessness and as nutritious snacks for children in out of school clubs. Produce distributed through the Winter Fruit & Veg Pledge will go a long way to helping people and communities across the UK access healthy, nutritious food.”
