The move is focussed on smaller Best-one stores that do not have the capacity to adopt the ‘store within a store’ hybrid format

Bestway is set to boost competitiveness for Best-one retailers by giving them access to Bargain Booze’s pricing, promotions, and ranging expertise, The Grocer can reveal.

The move is focussed on smaller Best-one stores that do not have the capacity to adopt the ‘store within a store’ hybrid format with a dual-branded fascia and Bargain Booze’s full off-licence offer.

It aims to help retailers grow alcohol sales, footfall and basket spend thanks to “an improved, value-led proposition for the consumer”, according to the wholesale giant.

“We’ve been testing the Bargain Booze hybrid format with some of our larger Best-one sites over the past 12 months, and we’ve been very pleased with the sales uplift it has shown,” Bestway trading director Kenton Burchell told The Grocer.

“We’re now planning to give smaller Best-one stores access to Bargain Booze’s pricing, promotions and ranging expertise without the need to stock the full offer and convert to a dual-branded fascia.

“It gives retailers that point of difference because Bargain Booze is positioned to be more competitive against the rest of market. And if an opportunity to develop into a larger store with a full refit and hybrid proposition does arise, then we’ve helped them to start that journey.”

Bestway expects the new service will be live in the coming months. As part of the move, Bargain Booze retailers will also get access to an “improved convenience offer through its Best-one expertise”.

The wholesale launched its first Best-one hybrid store with Bargain Booze in April last year in Kingswood, Bristol. The conjoined format is top-up and impulse-led, with its Bargain Booze off-licence range sited within it.

It followed the success of its Costcutter and Bargain Booze tie-up, which brings together Costcutter’s strong fresh food offering and an extensive beers, wines and spirits package through the Bargain Booze element.

Bestway also opened a Costcutter hybrid store with Wine Rack in Guilford in December 2023, with the latter offering a premium off-licence range, including wines, champagne and spirits as well as quality beers and craft ales.
