Dalston’s Soda has recalled cans of its Pineapple Soda after discovering the packaging could “unexpectedly break apart and leave sharp edges”.
Both single cans with the batch code 037130 and 4x330ml multipacks with the batch code 037129 have been recalled. Both have a best before date of 4 August 2027.
Dalston’s Pineapple Soda is stocked in Waitrose, according to Assosia data.
The cans were being recalled due to a “packaging defect”, which meant some cans might “may rupture unexpectedly, leaving sharp edges”, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said. This presented “a risk of injury”, it added.
Point of sale notices would be displayed in retail stores selling the product, explaining that the product was being recalled and what customers should do if they had bought it, the FSA said.
Consumers who had purchased the affected product should not try and open it, and instead avoid any unnecessary handling of the product then safely dispose of it, it added.
A spokeman for Dalson said the recall was “a precautionary measure”.
“Following a small number of reports of cans from a single production of our Pineapple Soda rupturing, we made the decision to voluntarily recall the affected stock as a precautionary measure,” they said. “The safety and quality of our products is our highest priority.
“We have worked closely with the Food Standards Agency and our trade partners to remove the impacted product from the market promptly. Consumers who purchased Dalston’s Pineapple Soda from the affected batch are advised to dispose of cans carefully in their household waste and contact us at hello@dalstons.com for a full refund.”
Dalston’s was founded in 2012 by Duncan O’Brien as Dalston Cola, promising an independent alternative to market leaders in the on-trade.
The business rebranded in 2016, launching new flavours and pushing into retail.
In January, it secured an £850k investment from Sorven Capital and hired GrowUp marketing director Sally Rose as its new MD.
