Lidl has matched Morrisons in grocery market share, becoming UK’s joint fifth-biggest supermarket.
Both now account for 8.3% of the market, according to Worldpanel by Numerator data covering the 12 weeks to 22 March 2026.
Lidl’s market share has risen from 7.8% a year ago, while its sales have grown by 9.6%. At the same time, Morrisons’ share has dropped from 8.4% as its sales have grown by only 2.3%.
Lidl has been the UK’s fastest-growing bricks & mortar supermarket each month since October 2023 in Worldpanel’s regular market updates. It has been snapping at Morrisons’ heels for a number of months, coming within 0.1 percentage points in November last year.
Last August, The Grocer revealed Lidl had overtaken Morrisons in food & drink market share, excluding alcohol, household, toiletries and healthcare.
Lidl has not commented on today’s landmark. It is thought to be keeping its powder dry for when it overtakes Morrisons.

It would mark a dramatic change to UK’s ‘big four’ supermarkets since 2022, when Aldi overtook Morrisons for fourth place, behind Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda.
Lidl’s sales have been boosted by the Lidl Plus app, which launched in the UK in 2020 and by last year was the country’s fourth most popular loyalty scheme, according to a recently published YouGov poll.
Aldi, which has resisted offering a loyalty scheme in favour of simplicity and the same low prices for all, has lost market share over the past year, falling from 10.8% to 10.6%, according to Worldpanel’s latest data. Aldi’s sales have grown by 2.3% year on year, behind the total market growth rate of 3.9%.
